Twin Fan Hovercraft Maintenance

The hovercraft maintenance procedures on our web page are an introductory guide and not a complete set of maintenance instructions.  It is important to read the Maintenance section in the Operator's manual which is more detailed and is specific to each hovercraft model.

Preventative Maintenance Schedule

  • Remove any loose objects from floor of craft;
  • Check skirts and drag flap for damage;
  • Check engine oil level;
  • Ensure fanguard is properly secured;
  • Check washer and wiper;
  • Ensure hull drain plugs are in place;
  • In cold weather remove ice from fanguard, air filter, floor of craft, underneath engine and rudders;
  • Check engine radiator to ensure that it is not blocked with leaves or grass;
  • Check all lights;
  • Check operation of splitters/shutters and check operation of display units.

Post-flight Check:

  • In salt water conditions hose down all metal parts with fresh water;
  • Evacuate water in bilge with craft tilted backwards;
  • Set splitters into cruise position and shutters in open position so that piston rods are not exposed.
  • Turn off battery master switch;
  • Check washer bottle level.

After First Ten Hours of Operation:

  • Change engine oil and filter;
  • Check engine for oil and exhaust leaks;
  • Grease main drive shaft and pulleys;
  • Check coolant level;
  • Check engine intake and exhaust manifolds bolts for tightness;
  • Check drive belts for tension and adjust if necessary;
  • Check pulleys for alignment;
  • Inspect battery terminals and battery connections on engine;
  • Grease drive shaft bearings;
  • Check bottom hull for damage;
  • Replace worn or damaged skirts;
  • Check skirts for alignment with air holes;
  • Inspect alternator belts;
  • Check battery connections;
  • Check drag flap for damage or loose rope.

Every 25 Hours: 

  • Check hull for damage;
  • Check splitter and shutter hydraulics for leaks and oil level;
  • Check fan blades and drive belts for wear and damage;
  • Check grapple poles, mounts, spot light mount, fire extinguisher, grab handle and ring buoys and grab rails for security.

Every 50 Hours:

  • Change engine oil and filters;
  • Change filter on fuel/water separator;
  • Check riser and manifold bolts for tightness.
